When I was in graduate school, my linguistics program required me to take two courses in another department, so I chose rhetoric. Rhetoric is the art of argumentation and persuasion. One of my fellow students presented on the complexities of healthcare and she was very persuasive. What I remember most about her talk was when she showed us a hospital bill for the last days of a patient’s life while they were in the hospital. We could see, in factual detail, each decision for each minute of those final days, through the lens of medical care. It was a convincing reminder that our bodies are incredibly complex, and we depend on the expertise of many people and procedures to maintain them. Facts inform us and help us see the world more objectively. As illustrated in the book of Numbers, knowing information, such as how many able men you have for your army, is fundamental in making important decisions.
This Friday, our graduates will “commence” their journey after studies at DIU and live out the facts they have been learning, analyzing, and integrating through a rigorous academic process. They have learned how to engage with a complex world by observing and synthesizing the facts around them. Forming the mind to do this takes a lot of discipline and effort – but it’s worth it!
I want to congratulate all our graduates. You have worked hard, and you have finally reached this milestone in your lives. May you experience His abundant grace in wherever you go next from your DIU family and know that it has been our privilege to walk with you during your time of study with us!
Paz,
Scott

Upcoming Concert
Trinity South Arts welcomes the Purple Hulls for an evening of bluegrass fun on Saturday, May 6 at 7 PM in the Event Center. Talented identical twins Katy Lou & Penny Lea Clark were raised on a working purple hull pea farm near Kilgore, Texas. Their solid family values provide the inspiration and foundation for their authentic, acoustic driven music. The “Hulls” spent several years in Nashville honing their craft, writing for Sony Publishing, touring with various artists as side musicians, and doing session work. Since back in Texas, they have toured extensively across the country and abroad, releasing four studio projects. Details and free tickets here: https://tinyurl.com/PurpleHulls2023
